Expert Storyteller

I am a writer, stage director, editor, and story consultant.

I have been crafting stories professionally for 15 years. This includes writing, directing, editing and otherwise facilitating the projects of talented artists.

My primary skill is connecting the intent of the artists to the audience. I bring a deep understanding of how the public can respond to not just what is said, but how.

Legislating Love, by Natalie Meisner

“Under the thoughtful direction of Jason Mehmel – who is also the artistic director of
Sage Theatre, the Calgary indie company that produced Meisner’s script – Matt
McKinney, as Klippert, delivers a finely modulated performance that’s patient,
understated and feels genuine.”

-Stephen Hunt, Globe and Mail

“Jason Mehmel’s direction allows the action of the play to flow smoothly and effectively
through time and space and he does highlight McKinney as much and often as possible.

-Louis B Hobson, Calgary Herald

Cantata (Rumours of My Crazy, Useless Life), by Clem Martini

“Sage Theatre’s world premiere of Cantata (Rumours of My Crazy, Useless Life) is a master class in writing, directing and acting.”

-Louis B Hobson, Calgary Herald

King Kirby, by Crystal Skillman & Fred Van Lente

“I’m still reeling from the amazing production of King Kirby that I witnessed last night in the Pumphouse Theatres. […] a powerhouse of a production that communicates the comic book industry’s grossest injustice, the story of Jack “King” Kirby.”

-Liam Parklass, bettertheatre.wordpress.com

“Director Jason Mehmel gives his production an air of confident theatricality.”

-Louis B Hobson, Calgary Herald

Soliciting Temptation, by Erin Shields

“That’s where this Sage Theatre production excels. It’s riveting watching Cerra and Overall take and give over control. […] director Jason Mehmel’s astute, insightful direction […]”

-Louis B Hobson, Calgary Herald

“The intermissionless, 90-minute two-hander benefits from Jason Mehmel’s well-paced direction […]”

-Colin MacLean, gigcity.ca

A Beautiful View, By Daniel Macivor

“It all unfolds in the round of the Vertigo Studio Theatre, which director Jason Mehmel successfully manages to transform, alternately, into an airport bar, a campsite, a downtown apartment, a bar, all without much more than a tent parked at one end of the floor.”

-Stephen Hunt, Calgary Herald
